Mattress Bed & Ladder – A study in Carpentry, Metal Work, Soft Goods & Paint

Steven Capone designed a magical looking bed for Chautauqua Opera’s Once Upon a Mattress.  Our execution of the project began with a metal and wood framework.  It was covered with soft dimensional appliqués, which were upholstered in muslin, to make the 20 mattresses.  As designed, there is a trap door at one end and a gap between mattresses to allow crew and prop access.  Below is a gallery of the piece.
