ELEKTRA TO TOUR TOKYO, ST. PETERSBURG AND FLORENCE

Virginia Scenic has just finished building Elektra for Tokyo Opera Nomori which is scheduled to tour Japan, Russia and Italy. This set, designed by Michael Levine, required the collaboration of many countries and much logistical finesse. The whole set had to be engineered and built within one month for its shipping deadline. Each small block in the picture is a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood. The trussing alone is a work of art. Due to the size of this set and the time constraints, it could not be fully assembled here except in small pieces. Thus, the set going together in Tokyo was a cross your fingers deal. This set filled six shipping containers, required three different raked stage decks and logged hundreds of frequent flyer miles, but it went together and everything lined up.

We are currently in discussion with the Tokyo company to build more sets for them. We are on the road to big things.

2004 Colossal Canine Productions CLIFFORD LIVE!

We brought this loveable pup to life with his own dog house and back yard. Designed by David Gallo, this production went directly on tour all over the US. It was quite a different show for us, going from creating the stark reality sets to children's book format but we loved every minute.

2003 Phoenix Productions FAME

In 2003, Phoenix Productions brought us their touring production of FAME. This design, very reminiscent of New York, required muti level steel platforms and lots of chain link fencing, as well as practical lockers. The two towers invoke the feel of the Skyscrapers as well as the underground Subway. Please go to http://www.famenetwork.com/ to find out where this show will play next. Phoenix Productions GREASE

Virginia Scenic was called again to work with Phoenix Productions in constructing one of their latest musicals, Grease (designed by James Youmans).

Portsmouth, VA- In July 2002, Virginia Scenic and producer Howard Bender helped bring the first annual Todi Music Festival to Portmouth.  Fashioned after a similar festive collaboration between Spoleto, Italy and Charleston, SC, TodiFest brought a diverse series of musical performances from around the world.

Virginia Scenic provided extensive technical support to acts such as renowned pianist and composer Peter Nero and choralist Patricia Barber, among others. Todifest also brought performances of Verdi's Aida to Portsmouth, with Virginia Scenic providing Digitext/surtitle service. This allowed audiences to grasp the rich dialogue of Verdi's spectacle. Patrons were in awe of the train of elephants, cougars, tigers, and boas brought to the stage through Virginia Scenic, as well.

There were over ten venues that Virginia Scenic helped animate for the festival, all of which enlightened and entertained audiences from across the region. Other acts included Choral Treasures of Olde Towne, Viva Vivaldi, a country-rock concert by Robert Earl Keen, and Jubilation! with Dottie Peoples.

Altogether, TodiFest was a cultural and creative success which, over time, will bring cultural recognition to the city of Portsmouth.
